If
you've never hired someone to do a home project for you, it is
important to ask a lot of questions. Are they reputable? Are they reliable? Do they finish in a timely fashion? More importantly, are you confident in their abilities? Often it's the chemistry between
the homeowner and contractor that determines a satisfactory outcome.
By
all means, bid out the job. And don't necessarily award the work to the
lowest bidder or the one most eager for the job - maybe there's a reason
the contractor doesn't have work. Get at least three references from
each bidder and call them. Ask about four critical measures of past
work:
- On time
- On budget
- Took changes agreeably
- Finished the job to the owner's standards
Do
the right research up front and you'll find the right contractor - one
who understands your needs and respects your wishes. After all, you're
the boss.
